- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2009Does irritable male syndrome (IMS) really exist? This is a question that Diamond tackles early on in this excellent book. After reading the book cover-to-cover, I think the jury is still out. IMS may be a separate entity but it could also be a constellation of symptoms resulting from depression, fluctuations in stress, etc. Even so, it doesn't matter. Any way you slice it, this book gives us a vivid picture of the of male irritability and how this affects middle aged men.
It is more than humbling to read a book and find yourself described so well on so many of the pages. How does Jed Diamond know me? Am I on candid camera? Are my phones tapped? No. He is simply an astute therapist with a keen eye and a great deal of experience. All this comes through in the book as he explores the physiological, psychological, and social reasons for irritability in men. Beyond simply understanding what is going on, he gives suggestions and points men in the direction of resources to help men rise above their irritability and once again enjoy life.
The book is written in a colloquial style, with the author sharing some of his patients' experiences and even his own. It is not specifically meant to be a book for scholars in this area, but is extensively referenced such that you can review the source material. I found the book to be incredibly helpful and I found the case studies illustrated problems vividly and kept the book from being dry and boring.
There are some caveats here, however. The book describes changes that occur in men but quite obviously cannot account for every man's unique environment. Diamond may be telling us that men need to closely examine their lives within the context of their own physiolgoical and psychological changes, but it is not as though men got the 'defective model.' Women, too, have to cope with their unique subset of changes throughout life. How these two worlds collide is beyond the scope of this book. Moreover, every individual has to apply this knowledge based what occurs in their own life.
Also, Diamond exclusively examines IMS within the context of traditional male-female relationships. He does not examine the effects of IMS on homosexual relationships or more non-traditional family arrangements. This is not a deficit for those of us in traditional, monogamous, male-female relationships but limits the scope of the book somewhat for those who don't fit into such rigid categories.
This is a book that you will read, reread, and keep on your bookshelf for future reference. It is both inspiring, potentially life changing, and something you will want to keep and refer back to time and time again.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2004Around me I've watched men over 50 suddenly dissolve marriages, maltreat their spouses, trade long-cherished values for whim, fall victim to depression, or withdraw into impenetrable cocoons. And I've wondered why. It was logical to blame and disrespect them for their transgressions ... their failings of character.
That's until a sensitive psychotherapist had the consciousness and conviction to search for the origin of these problems. Why have so many loving and giving women and children had to endure so much heartache from men in their lives? Is this just selfishness or immaturity?
Finally, Jed Diamond provides answers with an empowering revelation that IMS is both manageable and treatable. This gently fulfilling book brings empathy, perspective, solutions and solace to those who suffer and those who suffer the consequences.
His articulate and sensitive voice belongs in any home where people are trying to understand and manage the inevitable and sometimes unwholesome consequences of male passages through life stages. The author speaks to a new awareness akin to the discovery of PMS and the liberation that this insight has brought to women.
Men deserve, and with this book receive, their own measure of social sensitivity to the most challenging times of life. So much pathology can be eliminated in families and relationships when enough people read this book.
Jed Diamond has given many a second chance to make their "third-age" more productive, happier, and less fraught with tribulation. His book is a breakthrough that this aging country - which tends to marginalize and disenfranchise its aging males - sorely needs.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2018This is one of my favorites. I purchased this book after researching IMS and documenting my daily life while living with one. I actually cried. All my frustrations of not knowing how to explain this to anyone was all there in this book. A clear cut understanding of what others went through in their relationships. I actually felt as someone was hiding around the corner of my relationship. Unfortunately, my relationship didn't make it, I would highly suggest every female and Male purchase this book, IMS, can and will destroy your life as you know it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2012This book is an eye opener both for myself and so many of the men that I am in contact with both socially and in business. There is so little said about issues facing males and we almost expect that crankiness and anger are the norm in male behaviour. We all need to become more aware and help people solve this affliction in their lives.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit repetitive and anecdotal
I think much has happened since the author wrote this book (2004 I think).
I was hoping for something more concrete, scientific and to be honest useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Very useful book. I think there is a large percentage of men who suffer with IMS and work pressures are increasing the anger culture that has developed. The stereotype of grumpy old men or Victor Mildrew is well known yet society doesn't acknowledge the serious nature of this condition. IMS has destroyed my family as my husband became so hostile and unpredictable. I was left walking on eggshells and had to walk away from the marriage. I think IMS has it's roots in an abusive or neglectful childhood.Troubled childhood=troubled midlife.
This book doesn't really give the 'fix' since it has to be the man who decides to take action. If your husband has IMS you will feel reassured it's not you and the examples will have you saying "Yes that is happening to me"

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for men, to not suffer alone an to understand why we as men to get more support an understanding on how we can bette
Just a great book for both men and women in understanding why men do the things we do in times of crisis an loss, this book will give you clarity an a rich understanding why men react an withdraw from their lives an family, an go into that deep swirl of depression of feeling loss an irritable within themselves, this book should be compulsory for any man going through any form of mental indifference an I highly suggested that therapist encourage their clients to read this book it's only one of its kind to in which readily clearly explains why men become irritable the symptoms that come with it, I really believe if men where to read this book there would be no domestic violence in this world because by reading the book that will come to a deeper understanding that that too are violating themselves, an having a better understanding in why they are being that why they are which Jed distinctively clearly explains in this book, please do read this book it will defiantly give you a deeper understanding an clarity that you are not suffering alone.
